The Shape of Water

Poster of The Shape of Water

Guillermo Del Toro is a masterful storyteller and I can only think that he inhabits a magical and surreal world. My favorite of his films is The Shape of Water. The cinematography and set design aesthetic creates the effect of walking through a dream. Del Toro plays with both physics and preconceived notions about what it means to be seen for who one truly is and what it means to love. The film has an interesting retro-future aesthetic. The main character is a mute woman who travels through life unseen until she encounters a creature from the Amazon who is the subject of a top secret experiment. The music, casting and editing in this film were flawless. The magic of love and dreams triumphs over the desire for greed and power. This film was original in every way.
